Gelato ?

Have any of you tried gelatos before? I've watched several videos and I still have a few questions? Do you just let them dry after using? Is the gesso just used as a layer between the wetness of the gelatos?

Has anyone used the distressed crayons (Tim Holtz)? If so, how??

I haven't used them, but was tempted to get some the other day at HL.
You're right about gesso; it is mainly a coating to keep wet media from soaking into paper too much.
I thought the gelato's were kinda like crayons but that you used them with water for washes and spritzes and sprinkles, or you used them to color other types of stuff like texture paste and gel medium.

I have used gelatos but like the oil pastel crayons much better. They smear and blend a lot easier than the gelatos. Just scribble where you want a little color, wet your fingertip and rub over it. You can also use a paint brush or q-tip. They will dry on their own. And you can use gesso, it will keep the paper from tearing or balling up if you rub too hard. I didn't use it when I experimented with mine. I ordered a box of 24 crayons from Amazon for less than $14.

I use gelatos like water colors. I scribble on wax paper or discarded plastic product packaging, the spritz with a little water and mix with a paintbrush. I drip it or fling it with a small paintbrush for splatters, or I smear some onto plastic packaging (not too much) and then lay it wet side down where I want the color on my paper. I usually blot a bit with paper towel. Laura Whitaker has some youTube videos where she demos that technique.

I have a set of TH distress crayons but haven't done very well with them.
