America The Beautiful . . . for the most part we all live in different locations…from East and West to North and South, the USA is filled with beauty . . . both in nature and hearts. We've all seen the beauty of the sunset, the majesty of a thunderstorm, the birds on branches, flowers blooming, the seasons changing, freshly fallen snow, rainbows, majestic mountains, sparkling lakes, wooded paths, ocean waves crashing, dessert blooms. We’ve taken road trips and vacations where we have taken pictures that might be so random they don’t end up on the pages of our books . . . maybe it’s the hot air balloon that suddenly appears in the sky above you, or a sign that brings a smile to your face, maybe a barn quilt painted on an old barn that has seen better days, or even an Amish buggy towing a boat. The beauty goes beyond nature and is seen in the love and kindness of a stranger that helps you after a storm, a kind teacher, the mailman who leaves biscuits for your dog, the neighborhood kids with their lemonade stands, playgrounds and smiles, the person in the grocery line who lets you go in front of them. In these times when we are dealing with so many negative things in the news, where so many only think of themselves, where our country is experiencing unrest, where truth is up to what an individual wants it to be . . . in these times, I think it would be a great thing to just focus on how beautiful our country is and some of the ways we see her.

Remember - A new Blue Plate Special challenge is posted each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and participants have until the 3rd of the following month to complete and post their creations.

People helping people is one of the many things that makes America beautiful. We are one of the most generous nations existing. There are so many organizations that help others, but it's not just organizations. It is also the many individuals who go the extra mile to help others....maybe a neighbor, a teacher, the mailman, a food pantry worker, a scout, a babysitter, a cashier at the local market, a service member, a friend, a family member, a crossing guard, a medical worker, a blood donor...the list is endless.
Today's challenge is to create a LO featuring someone helping someone else or a picture of someone and journaling telling how they help others.

I chose to feature this food packing event. By selling kettle corn at fairs and corn mazes $25,000 was raised to provide 100,000 meals to be sent to those in famine areas. The people that helped with this were pre-school children to those in their 80s. There were some that had physical limitations. They gave up many weekends to make kettle corn and spent hours standing at the tables packaging the food. My husband had the privilege of traveling to Africa to personally deliver boxes of food to a nomadic tribe that still hunted with bows and arrows and lived in grass huts. Similar to the Native Americans who were put on reservations, these tribes were put on reservations where they could not follow the animals to hunt and the land had been suffering from a drought for nine years. Berries became one of their main sources of food. After they had harvested all they could reach, they would gather chimpanzee feces and pick the undigested berries out of it. These boxes of a simple meal of rice, seasoning, vitamins, protein, and chicken flavoring were a gourmet meal to them.
But the giving wasn't just about the meals being sent to Africa. Enough turkeys were donated to the local food pantry to make sure everyone with a need in the community was also taken care of.
